Regional and Global Integration: Quo Vadis?

The Global Development Conference in Prague (January 16-18, 2010) will focus on globalization and regional integration in the context of the recent economic crisis. While the economic and political consequences of the crisis will undoubtedly cast a deep shadow on the economies of developing countries, it is also likely to hasten the structural shift in global economic power from the Western countries to the emerging economies. Will political pressures to push back globalization now come from the West? And how can developing countries counter it? Is a new variant of globalization likely to emerge from this crisis, and if so, what will its contours be?

ERF 16th Annual Conference
Finding solutions to prevent financial shocks

The global economy is showing signs of recovery, but poor countries are still suffering the consequences of the financial crisis and global recession. There is clearly no single solution to the financial crisis. In order to widen the debate and find better solutions, the theme of the Economic Research Forum’s (ERF) Annual Conference was “Shocks, Vulnerability and Therapy”. Held in Cairo, Egypt from November 7-9, the conference by GDN’s Regional Network Partner for the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region, is today the most important regional platform for ERF and non-ERF affiliates discussed frontier thinking about economic development.

Inter-Regional Research Project launched in Latin America, Africa
To focus on commodity dependence in oil, copper and food security

It is no secret that the economies of Latin America and Africa remain highly dependent on a few commodities. The first in a series of Inter-Regional Research Projects (IRPs) – a new GDN initiative – will study institutional designs that better facilitate the management of volatile income from oil, copper and agricultural commodities, while at the same time promoting food security, economic growth and long-term development. Utilizing a comparative perspective, the project involves partners in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa.
