| THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS! ONLY ONE MONTH UNTIL GDN'S 11TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE The countdown has begun! GDN's Eleventh Annual Conference is only four weeks away. Speakers from a wide range of disciplines and countries will discuss key issues related to globalization and regional integration at the event, on January 16-18, 2010 in Prague, Czech Republic. The conference is being held under the auspices of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and The City of Prague, and in partnership with the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education Economic Institute (CERGE-EI).
This year, the conference will begin with an opening session featuring remarks from the honorable H.E. Dr. Juraj Chmiel, Minister for European Affairs, Czech Republic. The opening session, "Globalization Under Threat," will feature discussions on the emergence of protectionist voices against free trade and for a more regulated international financial sector. Prof. Guillermo Calvo from Columbia University will be the Keynote Speaker. GDN Chairman Prof. Ernesto Zedillo will chair the session. Plenary two, "Lessons for regional integration from the EU" is the EU sui generis?," will discuss the European Union model, widely regarded as an example of the highest degree of regional integration, and what lessons can be drawn from it to achieve greater economic convergence.
Plenary three, "One Way or many? Varieties of Capitalism" will discuss the various forms of Capitalist economic systems, characterized by differences in the extent of regulation and structures of capital and labour institutions, and which one is more likely to be most stable given the economic meltdown.
At the fourth plenary, a roundtable on "Regional Responses to the Crisis," participants will reflect on how different regions of the world have been affected by the global economic crisis, how they have responded and how a global, unified agenda can be pursued against future crises to minimize their effect on the poor.
Another roundtable, the fifth plenary called "Reforming Global Financial Governance" will discuss changes necessary to the global financial governance in view of the recent crisis, and implications for Official Development Assistance (ODA).
Also scheduled is a special session on Climate Change, in which Prof. Lord Anthony Giddens from London School of Economics will be the keynote speaker. The conference program also includes 8 workshops and 15 plenary sessions on important development issues and GDN's ongoing projects.
A complete program is now available on the GDN website. Watch that space for further news and updates.
